$700-$1,200

Starter Stack

Already has a Mac and wants local backups first.

Protect the Mac, iPhone, Watch, and photos before adding services.

macfallback

Existing Mac

Use the Mac you already own for the starter setup.

If the goal is local backups and Photos originals, the best first move is often using the Mac already in the house before buying another machine.

Exclusions

Avoid List

Putting the Apple Photos library directly on a NAS

Apple warns against network locations for Photos Library. Keep the library on Mac or direct APFS storage, then back it up.

Treating Optimize Mac Storage as a backup

Cloud placeholders are not the same as local originals. Download originals before backup.

Public admin panels for home services

Default to local network and VPN access. Port forwarding is not the beginner path.

Replacing every Apple service on day one

Find My, Apple Pay, App Store, and iMessage stay. The goal is not purity.
